Guidance: HPAI in companion animals (cats, dogs, ferrets) in B.C. 8th Jan. 2025

Government of British Columbia
Share:

While no companion animals (cats, dogs) HPAI cases have been reported in B.C., companion animals in the United States and other parts of Canada have contracted HPAI through exposure to sick and dead wild birds and domestic poultry, as well as infected raw milk and raw meat, including exposure through commercial raw food diets. Reported signs included neurological and respiratory problems and death.

Reporting sick cats and dogs
Suspicion for HPAI in domestic animals is reportable to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the BC Chief Veterinarian. If HPAI is suspected in a companion animal:

Inform a veterinarian. If you are bringing a pet in for an examination that might have HPAI, advise clinic staff ahead of time so they can take measures to protect staff and other patients
Contact your nearest Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Animal Health office
Submit a report to the Chief Veterinarian via webform (Reportable and notifiable diseases - Province of British Columbia). Alternatively, call the BC Animal Health Centre at 1-800-661-9903
