Larsen and Laporta 2024: Carry-over effects of maternal late-gestation heat stress on granddaughter's growth and mammary gland development

Share:

Larsen and Laporta evaluated the effects of heat stress of the dairy cow on the second generation of dairy cows.

  • The daughter’s (F1) of a mother (F0) exposed to heat stress (shade only for heat abatement) in late-gestation produced less milk in their first lactation
  •  The grand-daughter’s (F2) also had reduced lactation compared to the grand-daugther’s of cows that had access to shade and active cooling via fans and water soakers
  •  Otherwise, the grand-daughter’s of mother’s exposed to heat stress had no difference to the control group: same growth trajectories, dry matter intakes and phenotype of the mammary gland
