Peña-Mosca et al. (2025 preprint) investigated the impact of highly pathogenic influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) in a dairy herd of approximately 3,876 adult cows in Ohio. Clinical disease last about 3 weeks in approximately 20.0% (777) of the adult cows. Milk losses were estimated at 900 kg per cow in affected cows over 60 days-post-outbreak. The authors estimated the economic losses due to decreased milk production, mortality and early herd removal were 950 USD per clinically affected cow.
