Clade 2.3.4.4b highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 viruses: Knowns, unknowns, and challenges

Xie et al. (2025) reviewed the current information on high pathogenicity avian influenza A H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b with the "aim to identify discrepancies and knowledge gaps for a more comprehensive understanding of the virus." The authors concluded: "However, it remains unclear why the virus is so widespread and infectious in various hosts and regions, and also, the potential risks of the rapidly evolved virus to animals and humans remain unknown."
