Characterization of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in retail dairy products in the US

Share:
Spackman et al. (2024) published on the first retail milk sampling performed by the FDA. From 18 to 22 April 2024, 297 samples of pasteurized milk products were tested using quantitative real-time RT-PCR. 60 samples were positive for viral components and they were identified as clade 2.3.4.4 belonging to the goose/Guangdong/1996 H5 HPAIV lineage. The 60 samples were tested for viable virus by inoculating a dilution into an embryonating chicken egg; no viable avian influenza virus was confirmed.
