A one health investigation into H5N1 avian influenza virus epizootics on two dairy farms

Share:
Shittu et al. (2024 preprint) described the study of two Texas dairy farms affected by H5N1. 64% (9/14) milk specimens and 2.6% (1/39) nasal swab specimens had H5N1 HPAI detections. SARS-CoV-2 was isolated in a nasal swab collected from a sick cow in a HPAI affected herd. 17 cattle workers at the 2 studied farms had negative nasopharyngeal swab samples, but 2 of 14 that donated sera had elevated neutralizing antibodies against a related H5N1 strain.
