Spillover of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 virus to dairy cattle

Nature has released an Accelerated Article Preview from Caserta et al. on the spillover of HPAI H5N1 from wild birds into dairy cattle. The manuscript reviews the epidemiological investigation of 9 farms in four states in the USA: Texas, New Mexico, Kansas and Ohio. One important finding was the transmission of H5N1 B.3.13 from a farm in Texas to a farm in Ohio after the transport of 42 apparently healthy lactating cows based on phylogenetic analysis.
