Washington State:
Four agricultural workers tested presumptively positive for avian influenza after working with infected poultry at a commercial egg farm in Franklin County. The individuals experienced mild symptoms and have been provided with antiviral medication. Testing of additional individuals on the farm is currently pending, and the number of cases under investigation may change. These are the first presumed human cases of H5 virus under investigation in Washington state. The cases took place at a farm that was the site of an avian influenza outbreak in chickens. About 800 000 birds were euthanized after test results by the Washington State Department of Agriculture on 15 Oct [2024] showed that they were infected with avian influenza.
California
Human Cases in California ------------------------- Confirmed Human Cases: 15 These numbers were last updated on 23 Oct 2024. California's Response --------------------- CDPH is working with local, state and federal partners to monitor bird flu in farm animals and people who work closely with poultry and dairy cows. California has distributed protective gear to dairy farms and workers. People who work with infected dairy cows or raw milk should use protective gear to reduce the risk of getting bird flu. Public health leaders are helping ensure individuals with symptoms of bird flu have access to testing and treatment, if needed. California has received 5000 additional seasonal flu vaccines for people who work with dairy cows in the Central Valley. The seasonal flu vaccine protects against serious illness from seasonal flu and may reduce the chance of human and bird flu viruses mixing and becoming more dangerous.
Missouri: follow-up on human H5N1 case with no known animal or bird contacts
A Missouri resident who shared a home with a patient hospitalized with bird flu in August [2024] was also infected with the virus, federal officials reported on Thursday [24 Oct 2024]. But symptomatic health care workers who cared for the hospitalized patient were not infected, testing showed. The news eased worries among researchers that the virus, H5N1, had gained the ability to spread more efficiently among people.
